Dr. Sandi's Prop Recommendations

Welcome to the sun-kissed world of yoga, where the beach meets the mat and every pose is an ocean wave waiting to be surfed. As a yoga student, it is important to recognize that the right props can transform a practice, creating a seamless flow and enhancing the overall experience. So, let's dive into the sea of yoga props, including my recommendations, which are all hyperlinked below.
Imagine the gentle rise and fall of ocean waves – that's the stability yoga blocks provide. These compact foam or cork companions are perfect for bringing the ground closer and adding support to various poses. For instance, in Trikonasana (Triangle Pose), place a block under your hand to maintain balance and deepen the stretch. Feel the solid foundation, just like the steady embrace of the shore.

Bolsters, those plush clouds of comfort, bring the beach vibes to your practice. Picture a serene sunset as you recline over a bolster in Supta Baddha Konasana (Reclining Bound Angle Pose). Feel the gentle support beneath you, allowing your body to surrender to the postures, much like the soothing caress of the evening sun on the horizon.

As you roll therapy balls beneath your body, envision them as pebbles on the shore – small yet potent. These balls are excellent for self-myofascial release. In Child's Pose, place the balls beneath your forehead and let the subtle pressure release tension, akin to the rhythmic ebb and flow of waves on the sand.

Incorporating weights into your practice is like infusing sunshine into your routine. Enhance your strength and balance with weighted Warrior III Pose. Hold a pair of light dumbbells, arms reaching forward, embodying the radiant warmth of the sun as you soar gracefully over the mat.

Just as a boardwalk connects the sandy shores, yoga straps bridge the gaps in flexibility. In Paschimottanasana (Seated Forward Bend), loop a strap around your feet and gently pull yourself forward, feeling the stretch without straining. Let the strap be your guide, much like a sturdy boardwalk guiding you over the soft sands.

Imagine the beach breeze enveloping you in a cozy cocoon – that's the essence of yoga blankets. Fold a blanket for extra support in Savasana (Corpse Pose), letting it cradle you like the gentle embrace of ocean breezes. Find solace in the stillness, much like the tranquility of a quiet beach at dawn. Whether you are in a Yin practice or a yummy Restorative class, I strongly encourage you to have 3-4 yoga blankets to support your practice.

In the world of yoga, props are not mere accessories; they are allies that elevate your practice to new heights. Embrace the beach-inspired props, and let each session become a journey where the mat transforms into the shoreline, and every asana is a wave waiting to be surfed. So, unroll your mat, feel the sand beneath your fingertips, and let the props guide you on a yogic adventure filled with sunshine, serenity, and the rhythmic dance of the ocean waves.
Take care and remember to breathe! 🌊☀️
